Artist Statement:

In her own words Alexis Rosasco describes herself as “an artist who dreams of one day stepping foot in Africa.” Despite never having traversed its landscapes or witnessed its unparalleled wildlife, Rosasco feels an inexplicable connection to the the animals depicted in her newest collection, Dreams of Africa. Each brushstroke is imbued with my longing to experience their wild beauty, and my fears that I might never have the chance to witness these species in their natural habitats before they fade into memory.”

It is evident within her work that Rosasco aimed to capture not only the beauty but also the fragility of these magnificent creatures as they face an uncertain future. Using black and white acrylic paint, she explores the contrasts of light and shadow, infusing the works with a sense of depth and emotion. The intentional drips of black paint cascading across the canvas serve as a metaphor for the erosion of their habitats—a stark reminder of the unpredictability and violence of both nature and human impact. The strong gazes of the creatures depicted convey an awareness that transcends the canvas, inviting viewers to reflect on the current environmental crisis. There is a palpable tension in their eyes, a silent plea—a confrontation with our role in their survival. This surrealist element in Rosasco’s work evokes a dream-like quality, merging reality with the imaginative, illustrating the duality of beauty and loss.

“Through this series, I aim to ignite conversation and provoke a deeper understanding of our intertwined existence with the wildlife of Africa. My paintings are not merely representations but rather a call to action, emphasizing the urgency of preservation and the inherent beauty that we stand to lose. As I explore these ideas through monochromatic contrasts and dripping forms, I hope to inspire others to connect with, protect, and champion the incredible biodiversity that our planet holds, ensuring that the savage beauty of Africa is not just a dream, but a reality that can endure for generations to come.”
